Additional payments to Superannuation

Voluntary or Employer additional payments to super

Updated this week

You may receive requests from employees to pay additional superannuation on their behalf. These can either come from:

  1. Their net pay as a voluntary member contribution (employee contribution).

  2. Or the company may choose to invest extra superannuation as part of a salary package (employer additional contribution).

  3. Their gross pay (salary sacrifice). Separate article Add a Super Salary Sacrifice

In Employee Details, Payments, Superannuation, you can see the Superannuation Fund set up for the employee, and you can Add and manage these additional superannuation contribution records. The Employer (SG) normally displays as [Award] in the Amount column and Type is Employer (Award) because this comes from the employee's Award, Payments, Superannuation.

In Employee Details, Payments, Superannuation you can now Add or Edit these contributions via the relevant icons at the top of the screen. Clicking on the Add icon will bring up the Add Superannuation Contribution Details dialogue box. The Edit icon, for the Employer (Award) Type, contains the tabs Contributions and Monthly Tracking.

In Add, the Contribution tab allows you to enter the specific details required for the new superannuation contribution records that you wish to create for the employee, and in Edit, you can modify the existing Superannuation information for an employee. It is best not to use Delete; rather, use Edit.

Adding Employee Contribution also known as Voluntary Member Contribution (after tax deduction)

  1. To Add an after-tax super contribution, known as Employee Contribution, go to Employee Details, Payments, Superannuation, Add.

  2. The Fund Name can be typed in or selected from the drop-down menu.

  3. Member No can be typed in or selected from the drop-down menu.

  4. Contribution Type, select Employee Contribution from the drop-down menu, and in the field next to it you need to select one of the 4 options from the drop-down menu. The most common one being Personal.

  5. Enter the $ Amount, or %. If you entered a %, then tick the box Amount is %.

  6. OK.

Adding Employer Additional Contribution

  1. To Add an Employer Additional Contribution, go to Employee Details, Payments, Superannuation, Add.

  2. The Fund Name can be typed in or selected from the drop-down menu.

  3. Member No can be typed in or selected from the drop-down menu.

  4. Contribution Type, select Employer Additional Contribution from the drop-down menu, and in the field next to it you need to select one of the 2 options from the drop-down menu. If you select Voluntary, then you may have to report it as RESC and will have to tick the box Include on ATO Payment Summary as RESC. Please check this with the ATO or your Accountant. If you select Award or Productivity from the drop-down menu, you may not need to report this as RESC - again, please confirm with your Accountant or the ATO, as WageEasy cannot advise you on these options.

  5. Enter the $ Amount, or %. If you entered a %, then tick the box Amount is %.

  6. Check with the ATO or your accountant if you need to tick the box Include on ATO Payment Summary as RESC, or not.

  7. As this is truly super, you need to tick the box For STP reporting, include contribution as Super.

  8. OK.

Note: From 1 January 2020, where an employee salary sacrifices all or part of their salary into superannuation contribution benefits, these superannuation contribution amounts will be subject to further 12% superannuation contributions. Employers who currently contribute the 12% superannuation guarantee based on the cash salary only, will need to update WageEasy to comply with the new law by 1 January 2020. For more information check the ATO

In Setup, Awards, select an award (i.e. an award with an employee who Salary Sacrifices to super), Edit, Payments, Superannuation. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page and ensure that the Do not reduce Guarantee payment by Salary Sacrifice amount tick box is ticked.
